A proofreader carefully reviews texts to identify and correct language errors such as spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, punctuation errors and typographical errors. The goal is to ensure that the final text is technically error-free before publication or printing.
A proofreader’s duties
A proofreader checks spelling and detects typing errors and misspelt words, reviews grammar and syntax for correct sentence construction and ensures that punctuation such as commas, full stops and other punctuation marks are used correctly, as well as reviewing typography and formatting where they ensure consistent use of fonts, sizes and styles. The proofreader also checks that page references, footnotes and tables of contents are accurate, that images and captions are correctly positioned and numbered and that the layout appears professional without awkward line breaks or columns.
The difference between proofreaders and copy editors
A proofreader focuses on obvious errors and technical details whilst a copy editor has a broader remit that includes assessing the text’s content, style, tone and clarity. A copy editor might rephrase sentences and suggest improvements whilst the proofreader primarily corrects errors.
